UN Translators


As a documentary photojournalist, I tried always to look for the people who worked in the shadows. This picture was never published (maybe rightly so) but it’s something I noticed right away while working in the photo gallery of the United Nations General Assembly. The Third-World-inspired acoustic patterns; the muted, peace-oriented colors; and the unfilled seats reflected in diagonal glass from the floor below all underscore, at least for me, the significance of the United Nations and of preserving the multiple languages of our crowded planet.
